Low-Sulfur Heating Oil Comes to Pennsylvania

- 4:46 pm - July 19th, 2016

Last month, we told you about several of F.C. Haab’s “Home Remedies” for poor indoor air quality. Unfortunately, it’s a commonly held misconception that heating oil itself is bad for your air quality. The truth is that heating oil produces near-zero harmful emissions. Plus, F.C. Haab actually delivers cleaner, green blends that are even better for the air you breathe than conventional heating oil. But before we get into that, let’s backtrack and take a broader look at heating oil in the state of Pennsylvania.

As of July 1, 2016, by law, all heating oil in the state can now contain no more than 500 parts-per-million (ppm) sulfur. This is a huge reduction, as the limit previously ranged from 2,000-5,000 ppm depending on the region of Pennsylvania. However, F.C. Haab and the city of Philadelphia actually go further in reducing heating oil’s sulfur content. All of the heating oil we deliver outside of the city contains at most 500 ppm sulfur, making it low-sulfur heating oil, and all of the heating oil we delivery within the city contains a maximum of 15 ppm, making it ultra-low sulfur heating oil. Since July 1, 2015, this latter limit has been the standard for all of Philadelphia.

F.C. Haab is proud to supply our customers with low-sulfur and ultra-low sulfur heating oil, as studies have found that these fuels:

  • Lower equipment maintenance needs
  • Boost heating system efficiency
  • Extend heating equipment life
  • Reduce pollution from heating systems
  • Improve the air quality of our neighborhoods
